The time it takes to reach Pluto depends on speed. As of 2014, no spacecraft has ever traveled from Earth to Pluto. NASA's New Horizons spacecraft was launched on Jan. 19, 2006 and is expected to arrive at Pluto on July 14, 2015, 11 years after it took off.
The 1,054-pound New Horizon spacecraft is traveling at approximately 34,174 mph, and it travels about 3 billion miles before it reaches its destination. Pluto follows a highly elliptical orbit, and its distance from Earth ranges from 2.66 billion miles to 4.67 billion miles. On the closest approach, New Horizon comes within 7,767 miles of the surface of Pluto.
