The estimated lifespan for seahorses living in the wild is between one and five years. Seahorses are carnivorous fish that range between about 0.6 inch and 14 inches in length.
There are 35 species of seahorses in the world, and many face extinction. Factors threatening seahorses include the medicine trade, the curio trade and the pet trade. About 150 million seahorses per year are taken from the sea for use in traditional Chinese medicines. Another 1 million are removed from the wild to be sold as souvenirs. About 1 million seahorses are taken from the sea and sold as pets each year.
