What is Long Term Evolution technology?

Long Term Evolution, commonly known as LTE, is a wireless broadband technology created to support roaming Internet access via cellphones and handheld devices. Developed by the Third Generation Partnership, LTE offers significant improvement over older communication standards and is also known as fourth generation.

Long Term Evolution increases peak data rates as much as 100 megabytes per second downstream and 30 megabytes per second upstream. LTE has download speeds up to four to five times faster than 3G networks. Two components are required for 4G LTE accessibility: a network that can support LTE speeds and a device that can connect to the network and download information at a high enough speed.
