Why is the loon a Canadian symbol?

The loon is used as a national symbol to represent the rugged wilderness of Canada. There are five species of loons, including the yellow-billed loon, the Pacific loon, the red-throated loon, the common loon and the Arctic loon. The common loon is the official bird of Ontario.

Loons are known to be good divers. Unlike other birds whose bones are hollow, many of the loon's bones are solid. Their haunting call is used in movies and also as inspiration for festivals, contests and music. In 1987, the Royal Canadian Mint made a new one-dollar coin with the common loon on it. Loons create beautiful scenery during the winter as well.
