The loquat fruit is a sweet fruit that grows for consumption predominantly in Japan and for ornamental purposes in California. Indigenous to southeastern China, this pear-shaped fruit grows to between 1 and 2 inches and, depending on the climate, either has a sweet flavor or an acidic flavor.
Other countries that produce loquats include Israel, Brazil and parts of India. The fruit comes in two varieties: white-fleshed and orange-fleshed. Among the white varieties are Vista White, Champagne and Victory, while the Big Jin, Mogi and Early Red are among the orange varieties. Recipes for drinks, desserts and chicken entrées include the loquat fruit.
