Doctors recommend lotions that contain vitamin A and over-the-counter unscented moisturizers to manage symptoms of ichthyosis, and solutions with urea, lactic or salicylic acid for ichthyosis that causes scaling, according to the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Additionally, petroleum jelly, mineral oil and special soaps also help.
Ichthyosis is a dermatological condition typified by dry or thick scaly skin, explains the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Symptoms of ichthyosis may be mild or severe and include dry skin, scaling, itching and shedding of skin layers. In extreme cases, scratching may result in an infection or scarring.
