How many people are eligible to win the Pulitzer Prize?

The Pulitzer Prize is awarded in 14 journalistic categories, including distinguished local reporting, editorial writing and photography; and six literary categories, including distinguished fiction, play and biography. Each prize comes with a cash award of $10,000.
Any book published in the previous year can be nominated for the Pulitzer Prize, either by the publisher or by the author. Four printed copies must be submitted by June 14th (for books published before June 15th of that year) or October 1st (for books published in the second half of the year). Journalism entries must be submitted through the Pulitzer Prize's website. Categories can have between five and 20 finalists.
