As of the end of 2013, IBM employs 431,212 people worldwide. Although IBM is an American company, only around 100,000 of these workers are employed in the United States.
IBM was ranked as the second-largest U.S. firm in number of employees by Fortune in 2012. As of the end of 2013, IBM operates 12 research laboratories around the world. Employees at these research laboratories are responsible for many modern inventions, including the automated teller machine, magnetic stripe cards and hard disk drives. Although IBM is one of America's largest multinational firms, as of 2013, its employees do not actively participate in a union.
