Low-glycemic diets include a variety of methods or plans, and with a moderate amount of effort, are easy to maintain. WebMD reports that low-glycemic diets are generally based on the glycemic index, designed for those with diabetes, or to lose weight.
According to the Mayo Clinic, a typical low-glycemic diet will focus on oat, barley and bran cereals, whole grain breads, and fruits and vegetables. It is recommended that portions of potatoes are kept to a minimum, and large portions of rice and pasta should be avoided. There are many commercial diets available that are based on the glycemic index, but research has returned mixed results for their effectiveness in weight loss.
