What is an LS1 engine?

The LS1 engine is a third generation General Motors small-block V8 engine that was released in 1997 with the C5 Corvette car. The LS1 engine also became the default engine option for all Firebirds, Camaros, SUVs and full-size trucks the year after its initial introduction.
The LS1 engine had a fuel displacement capacity of 5.7 liters and measured approximately 346 cubic inches. The LS1 was also capable of generating up to 345 horsepower at 5,600 rotations per minute and 365 pounds feet of torque. The LS1 was the first engine in the GM's third generation V8 engine and was also referred to as the Vortec.
