What does LTE stand for when it comes to cell phones?

LTE stands for "Long Term Evolution" and is a wireless broadband technology. It supports Internet access via enabled cellphones and other handheld devices from any location where there is coverage.

Long Term Evolution is based on Internet Protocol and supports voice over IP, Internet browsing and other Internet Protocol-based services. LTE is not the same as Wi-Fi and is used for different purposes. LTE works best for roaming and long-distance communications, while Wi-Fi is most useful for servicing wireless local area networks on desktops, laptops and other computers. Higher-end smartphones, tablets with cellular network interfaces and some travel routers have LTE capability.
