LTE stands for long term evolution. It is a wireless voice and data communication standard based on GSM technology and is the most common 4G standard in the United States. LTE has a theoretical bandwidth capacity of 300 megabits per second, but real world speeds on current infrastructure are lower.
All four of the major mobile phone carriers in the United States use LTE as their 4G standard, with HSPA+ used as a supporting 4G standard in areas where LTE coverage is not yet available. The primary competing standard, WiMax, is being phased out by its primary adopters in favor of LTE.
