According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, lupus is potentially fatal although it's usually limited to affecting a person's quality of life. Lupus is an auto-immune disorder characterized by its preference to attack the body's joints and connective tissues. Organs, such as the brain, kidneys and heart, are also targets.
Lupus, as Johns Hopkins Medicine elaborates, tends to affect women in their late teens to middle adulthood. The female sex hormone estrogen has been linked to lupus. Although no cure for lupus exists, the disease has periods of activity and remission. Lupus is a multifactorial disorder with possible genetic and environmental causes.
