Lymphedema refers to swelling in the legs and arms that results from a blockage in the lymphatic system, according to the Mayo Clinic. Blockages typically occur when the lymph nodes incur damage and fluid is unable to drain, which leads to swelling.

The most common cause of lymphedema is cancer treatment that damages lymph nodes, explains the Mayo Clinic. The lymphatic system is unable to function normally which affects the immune system. A cure for lymphedema does not yet exist, but patients can manage the condition by caring for the affected limbs under the supervision of a medical professional or physician.
