Symptoms of lymphedema that affect the leg include swelling of some or all of the limb, a heavy or tight feeling, discomfort, chronic infection and limited mobility, according Mayo Clinic. In some cases, the skin thickens and hardens, causing fibrosis.
Swelling resulting from lymphedema sometimes presents as mild changes in the size of the leg that are difficult to notice, but at other times the changes take a more severe scale and render the limb difficult to use. In cases of lymphedema caused by cancer treatments, the symptoms may not present until months or years after the treatment is completed, states Mayo Clinic.
