While the concept of the robot is of ancient origin, the first humanoid robot was likely built by the Muslim inventor Al-Jazari around 1200 AD. His robot was an automated serving girl that, every seven minutes, would come out of a door and serve a cup of water.
Later robots were designed by Leonardo da Vinci, Jacques de Vaucanson and Hisashige Tanaka. However, the first digitally programmable robot was built by George Devol in 1954. The Unimate was not humanoid in form, but laid the foundation for all modern robotics work. Honda's ASIMO, introduced in 2000, was the first practical humanoid robot capable of easy interaction with humans.
