Where do mahogany trees grow?

True mahogany trees, scientific name Swietenia mahogani, are endemic to the humid, tropical environments of the Americas. Mahogany is most abundant in the Amazon basin, parts of Central America and various humid locations in Mexico, such as the Yucatan peninsula.

Mahogany was once abundant and covered a far larger area, but heavy logging reduced the natural range of mahogany in Honduras and Haiti. Logging has cut mahogany stocks in other countries, though not to the same dramatic extent. Some mahogany can be found in the extreme southern reaches of Florida, making these hardwood groves the only wild source of mahogany in the United States.
