The main character in the novel "Slam," by Walter Dean Myers, is Greg (Slam) Harris. Other main characters include his best friend Ice, his girlfriend Mtisha and Slam's grandmother.

Slam is a story that takes place in a poor African-American neighborhood in Harlem, New York. Slam, the main character, is constantly dealing with gang violence, drugs, murders and the hardships of school. Slam comes from a broken family with a younger brother and a loving grandmother who is sick in the hospital. Slam surrounds himself with his best friend Ice and his girlfriend Mtisha. Slam developed the nickname "Slam" because of his awesome ability to slam dunk the ball during basketball games.
