The two main characters in the 1961 musical "West Side Story" are Maria, played by Natalie Wood, and Tony, played by Richard Beymer. The two characters are young people from rival New York gangs who fall in love against the advice of their friends.

As tensions between their friends grow, the pair have to fight seemingly insurmountable odds to keep their love alive. Other characters in the musical included Riff, Anita, Bernardo, Schrank and Krupke, played by William Bramley. The musical was written by Ernest Lehman and Arthur Laurents, and it was directed by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins. As of January 2015, "West Side Story" had a 7.6 rating on the Internet Movie Database.
