Primary factors to consider while constructing a brick wall include the amount of brick needed, the type of mortar needed, the bricklaying pattern and the selection of bricklaying tools. Selecting the bricklaying pattern, which is called the "bond," includes considering what side of the bricks should face the exterior.

The amount of brick is determined by calculating the width, height and length of the wall. Most walls contain two rows of interlocking bricks, which are called courses. For standard bricks, each square foot of wall requires seven bricks.

Optimal mortar mixes vary depending on weather conditions and other factors.

While most bricklaying tools are universally applicable, some specialty trowels and other tools exist to expedite the construction of walls with certain patterns.
