Greece is surrounded by large bodies of water, including the Ionian Sea, the Mediterranean Sea, the Sea of Crete, the Thracian Sea and the Aegean Sea. The country's many islands are all located in these five seas.
In the interior of Greece, there are few significant lakes. The largest lakes include the Prespa Lakes, Lake Trihonida and Lake Pamvotida. The country is also home to numerous rivers, including the Evros, Axios, Pineios and the Acherodas. One of the most scenic is the Nestos River in Xanthi. Rivers that have a smaller water volume tend to dry up when the temperatures rise each summer.
