As of 2015, the majority of American ginseng is exported to China, according to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. American ginseng is valued in the Chinese market for its "cool" nature, as opposed to the "hot" nature of Asian ginseng.
The North Carolina Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services maintains a list of American ginseng importers on its International Trade Office site. The Los Angeles Times reports that the United States exported $77.3 million in American ginseng roots in 2014. High demand for American ginseng has led to an increase in illegal harvesting. In Wisconsin, the producer of 90 percent of exported ginseng, cases related to illegal harvesting have tripled since 2007.
