To call a German phone number from the United States or Canada, enter the American exit code, 011, enter the German country code, 49, and then enter the German phone number, excluding the zero preceding the area code. For example, to call (030) 44XXXX, enter 011 49 30 44XXXX.

To call a German number from other European countries, enter the European exit code, 00, instead of the American exit code. Unlike North American phone numbers, German phone numbers and area codes vary greatly in length. Some phone numbers are as short as 5 digits, including the area code. Germany, like most countries in the world, does not use area codes for cellphone numbers.
