How do you make a geocache container?

Make a geocache container simply and inexpensively by using a resealable plastic container such as a Tupperware or Rubbermaid container. Geocache containers need to withstand the elements year-round. Cache owners are often creative in their choice of containers.

1. Think of where you want to place your cache

   If you have a particular place in mind, scout out the area first to determine how big your container can be.

2. Make sure the container is watertight

   Your geocache container must withstand the elements: sun, rain, snow and wind. It may also have to withstand curious animals.

3. Think about the size of your cache

   The size of your container depends on the type of items you would like it to hold. Standard geocache containers come in specific sizes. A "nano" geocache container holds less than 10 milliliters, a "micro" geocache container holds less than 100 milliliters, a "small" geocache container holds between 100 milliliters and 1 liter, a "regular" geocache container holds between 1 and 20 liters, and a "large" geocache container holds 20 liters or more.

4. Determine how difficult you want your cache to be

   The size of your container also depends on how difficult you want your specific cache to be. Micro and nano -sized containers are extremely difficult to find, whereas regular and large caches are easier to spot.

5. Label your cache appropriately

   Micro and nano containers are difficult to label since they are so small. However, small-sized containers and up should be labeled "Official Geocache". Some go further to also label it with the name of the cache, and appropriate contact information for emergencies.
