Homemade sugar crystals can be crafted by suspending a cotton string in a jar of sugar water. For best results, the crystals must be left to grow for at least seven days.
- Concoct the solution.
- Transfer to a jar.
- Secure the string.
- Prepare the string with solution.
- Suspend the string.
Bring two cups of water to a boil over medium-high heat. Add four cups of sugar to the boiling water and stir with a wooden spoon until the sugar is completely dissolved. At this point, the solution will appear clear.
Take the solution off the heat and pour it into a jar. Cover the top of the jar with a piece of wax paper.
Cut a piece of cotton string that is around two-thirds the length of the jar. Attach a weight to the cotton string. Tie the opposite end to the center of a pencil.
Dip the string into the sugar-water solution and place it on the wax paper. Allow the string to dry for a couple days.
After the string has been dried for a couple days, suspend it in the sugar-water solution so that the pencil lies across the top of the jar. Leave the jar at room temperature and do not disturb for several days. For best results, leave it for approximately seven days.
