To make an oven-baked potato, wash the potato, poke holes in it, and bake it at 350 degrees Fahrenheit. When washing the potato, use cold water and a stiff brush. Once it is washed thoroughly, let it dry on a paper towel.

Poke the potato about eight to 12 times with a fork, covering all sides of the potato. This allows moisture to escape and air to get into the potato to cook the inside. Sprinkle the potato with oil and salt. Place it on the rack in the middle of the oven, putting a baking sheet on the rack beneath it to catch dripping oil.

Bake it for approximately one hour or when the skin is tender. A fork should be able to go through it easily.
