To build a shadow box, cut and glue five pieces of wood together in the shape of an open box. Fill the shadow box according to a theme with mementos, photos or knickknacks.
- Measure and cut the wood
For the back piece, measure and cut a piece of 1/4-inch pine that is 8 inches by 7 inches. For the top and bottom, measure and cut two pieces from 1/2-inch pine that are 6 1/2 inches by 4 1/2 inches. For the left and right sides, measure and cut two pieces from 1/2-inch pine that are 8 inches by 4 1/2 inches. Adjust the dimensions if desired.
- Glue and nail the box
Apply wood glue around the perimeter of the back piece. Add the sides one at a time, applying wood glue along the seams. Hold the box together with clamps while drying. To secure the box, hammer finishing nails into the corners.
- Decorate the box
Paint the outside areas of the box. Paint the inside with a contrasting color, or line it with fabric. For a fabric lining, cut five pieces of card stock that are 1/8 inch smaller than each of the interior sides. Cut the fabric pieces 1/2 inch larger than the card stock. Wrap the fabric around the card stock, and secure the material with double-sided tape. Glue the bottom panel down first, then glue down the sides.
- Display the box
Place the shadow box on a shelf, or use picture frame hooks to attach it to the wall.
