To make a snow globe, use easy-to-find materials such as a Mason jar, water, glitter, waterproof superglue and some plastic or ceramic figures. Snow globes are popular items that most child would enjoy making either for Christmas or any other winter holiday. This project is simple enough that a small child can make it with a parent's supervision.
An important part of this project is finding an unused 8-, 16- or 32-ounce Mason jar. If it's not possible to find one, another glass container that has a lid may be a substitution. In addition to the materials cited above, glycerin is an optional ingredient used so that the glitter can float properly.
- Choose a figure for the snow globe
- Attach the figure to the Mason jar lid
- Prepare the jar
- Place the lid on the jar
Some ideas include using a small plastic or ceramic figure of Santa Claus, a Christmas tree or a reindeer. The figurine should be small enough that it fits inside of the Mason jar.
Clean the Mason jar and its lid and dry it thoroughly with paper towels. Glue the figurine to the inside of the lid and allow it to dry for at least 24 hours.
Add water nearly to the top of the jar; place about five drops of glycerin and a very small amount of glitter to the water.
Apply glue to the inside edge of the lid, place it onto the jar and screw into place. Allow the glue to dry thoroughly.
