Ancient Egyptians created the first cosmetics using copper and lead ore and used cosmetics containing gum of frankincense and fresh mooring to treat wrinkles, according to WebMD. Before modern-day cosmetics, women used burnt matches for eyeshadow, berries for lipstick, and arsenic, lead, mercury and leeches to alter skin tone.
Makeup dramatically increased in popularity in the early 20th century due to its use in ballet, theatre and movies. The first patent for a faint pink nail polish was granted in 1919. Makeup for African-American females began to be sold by Fashion Fair, Flori Roberts, Astarte, Afram and Libra in the 1970s.
