The box mangle was invented in the late 17th century, and the smaller wringer mangle was invented in 1850. The mangle is sometimes referred to as a wringing machine.
The first mangle invented was known as the box mangle. It consisted of a heavy box weighted with bricks or rocks that slid across a sturdy frame. The purpose of the mangle was to wring excess water from laundry. The box mangle required two people to operate. It was used in commercial laundries and wealthy households. The wringer mangle was invented later and was designed for home use. It was smaller and could be operated by one person using a crank.
