Samuel Crompton developed the first prototype of the spinning mule in a study located at his manor house, called Hall i' th' Wood. His home was located in Bolton, Greater Manchester in North west England.
Crompton called his study the "conjuring room" and it was here that he worked on developing the first prototypes of a machine that could spin fine, even threads of cotton. This machine would go on to be called the spinning mule and revolutionized the textile industry. Crompton was a mill worker himself and was too poor to afford to patent his own invention. Although the spinning mule became a widely used machine, Crompton made little money during his lifetime from the machine's success.
