The Republic of the Maldives (the official name for the Maldive Islands) is located off the southern coast of Asia. It is in the Indian Ocean and lies southwest of India.

The area of the Maldives is 298 square kilometers, and the country has 644 kilometers of coastline. The Maldives are 1.7 times the size of Washington, D.C. The Maldives are located along the major sea trade routes in the Indian Ocean.
