A male buffalo is called a bull, whether referring to the American bison or the African water buffalo. American bisons are often labeled as buffaloes, though technically this term is incorrect.
The American bison bull is a massively built animal with a huge head and a distinctive shoulder hump that can make the bull stand between 5 1/2 to 6 feet tall. The bison is 12 to nearly 12 1/2 feet long. The front of its body is covered with dense, shaggy fur, while the fur at the back is shorter and lighter. It also has a long, dark beard, turned-up horns and round, black hooves.
