Construction on the Mall of America started in 1989 and was concluded in 1992. It is located in Bloomington, Minn. and was designed by the Triple Five Group.
As of 2014, the Mall of America is the second-largest shopping complex in North America. The complex covers an area of 4,870,000 square feet, with 2,500,000 square feet used as retail space. The original cost to build the mall was $625 million dollars. As of 2014, the Mall of America averages 40 million visitors per year. In March 2014, ground was broken on a $325 million expansion of the Mall of America. The expansion includes a 325-room hotel, underground valet parking and an additional 50 to 75 retail outlets.
