Mandalay is a city located in north-central Burma and sits along the eastern bank of the Irrawaddy River. It is 350 miles north of the current capital, Rangoon. It is Burma's second largest city and served as its capital from 1857 to 1885.
Mandalay is considered the center of Burmese culture and the main commercial, educational and health center of upper Burma. Mandalay was the last capital city of the independent Burmese kingdom and was founded by King Mindon to replace the former capital of Amarapura. The city and kingdom fell on Nov. 28, 1885, when the British completed their Burmese conquest.
