Is it mandatory to install a back-up camera in your car?

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has ruled that by May 2018, all new cars under 10,000 pounds must come equipped with rear visibility cameras. They have not required the installation of rear view cameras on cars that are already privately owned.
The NHTSA has made this ruling due to the number of people, mostly children, who are killed or injured in back-over crashes. The NHTSA states that there are 210 fatalities and 15,000 injuries per year due to back-over crashes. This new ruling hopes to increase safety for people in and around cars by allowing drivers to have better visibility of the area behind their car.
