How many airplanes are there in the world?

There are about 20,000 airplanes in the world as of 2013. Aircraft maker Boeing projects demand for new airplanes to top 35,000 over the next 20 years. The new planes are expected to meet rising demand and to replace older, less efficient models.

The number of airplanes worldwide is expected to be more than 40,000 by 2032. As of 2013, global passenger air traffic is growing at more than 5 percent per year. Demand dropped slightly in 2009 but has grown at a pace of at least 4.6 percent each year between 2010 and 2013. About 184 million passengers travel into and out of the United States by plane each year, as of 2013.
