Around 620,000 military deaths were recorded during the Civil War. This was around 2 percent of the population at the time. In addition, around 476,000 were wounded, and 400,000 were listed as missing or captured.
Many deaths and casualties during the Civil War were a result of disease. In fact, five soldiers died from disease for every three soldiers who were killed on the battlefield. Almost as many men died as prisoners during the Civil War as the total number killed during the Vietnam conflict. The Civil War is considered to be the bloodiest conflict in American history, and approximately one out of every four soldiers involved in the war never returned home again.
