More than 400,000 Americans died during World War II. The vast majority of these casualties were military personnel. Only about 1,700 American civilians died during the course of the war.
About 291,000 members of the armed forces died in combat in World War II. The rest died from other causes, such as accidents, injuries or disease. The Army suffered more casualties than any other branch of the military, with about 318,000 deaths. About 62,000 Naval personnel died during the war, as did more than 24,000 Marines. Of the 16 million Americans who served in the military during the war, only 2.5 percent were killed.
