The National World War II museum estimates between 6 to 8 million total military and civilian German casualties in the second World War. Estimates of World War II casualties vary based on which casualties are included, what sources are used and how the figures are calculated.
According to a 2005 report from the German Red Cross, the total number of German casualties includes 300,000 victims of Nazi persecution, over 2,000,000 deaths attributed to expulsion and displacement and 500,000 deaths related to bombing. A survey of German military records, led by Rüdiger Overmans during the 1990s, estimated military deaths at over 5 million, an increase of over a million in comparison to previous estimates.
