How many Canadians died in World War 1?

During World War I, approximately 59,544 Canadians were killed between 1914 and Nov. 11, 1918 while serving in uniform overseas. A further 6,000 deaths are recorded as part of the Canadian Books of Remembrance. This casualty figure accounts for soldier deaths between 1919 and mid-1921 due to wounds or illness.

Of the 59,544 casualties during the war itself, approximately 51,748 are recorded to have perished due to military action. The Canadian Expeditionary Force that fought in World War I was made up of 619,636 enlisted Canadians. Of this figure, around 424,000 served in locations overseas, and more than 172,000 Canadian soldiers are recorded to have been wounded during World War I.
