Most types of squid have eight arms, typically arranged in pairs, in addition to two longer feeding tentacles. The squid is a member of the cephalopod group of mollusks that also includes octopodes, and within this group exist more than 280 different types of squid, according to National Geographic.

The arms and tentacles of these creatures are very strong and vary in size according to the type of squid. The giant squid has tentacles up to 10 meters in length and arms up to 3 meters. The Caribbean reef squid is an example of a type of squid that has 10 rather than eight arms.
