Mosquitoes don't have any teeth. Mosquitoes bite with a long, serrated, pointed mouth called a proboscis. The proboscis consists of one tube that pierces the skin and sucks blood and another tube that pumps out saliva containing a mild pain-killer and an anti-coagulant.
The sores that may be seen after being bit by a mosquito are an allergic reaction to the mosquito's saliva. Only female mosquitoes bite humans and animals. They can drink up to three times their own weight in blood. Males feed only on flower nectar and plant juices. Female mosquitoes can live 5 to 6 months, whereas males live approximately 10 days.
