According to UNICEF article updated in May 2012, about 130 million babies are born each year. CNN notes that an accurate count of the worldwide birth rate is difficult since many countries don't register all new births.
In 2012, there were 3,952,841 births in the United States, according to the CDC. This equates to a birth rate of 12.6 per 1,000 population, or roughly one birth every 8 seconds. This rate is small when compared with the rates in developing countries, especially those in Africa. In 2012, Niger's birth rate of 50.06 per 1,000 population was the highest in the world, while the United States placed 147th on the same list compiled by Index Mundi.
