How many babies do cats have?

The average size of a litter of kittens is four to six. At the first stage of the birthing process, pregnant cats are often restless and vocal. They sometimes wander until they settle into the spot where they intend to give birth.
The second stage is the actual birth. Once the first kitten is born, the mother ordinarily tears the amniotic sac and cleans the baby. Subsequent kittens typically arrive at intervals of 30 to 45 minutes. This phase varies from two to 24 hours, depending upon the individual cat and number of kittens. During the third stage, the placentas are passed. The birth of each kitten should be followed by the emergence of its placenta.
