In four-four time, a sixteenth note counts as one-quarter of a beat. During a single beat, four of these notes can be played. Sixteen of these notes make up a whole measure.
In six-eight time, the sixteenth note counts as one-half a beat. A whole measure can contain up to 12 sixteenth notes in this time signature. The note is drawn with two flags at the top of the stem. Sixteenth notes may be connected together to indicate a single beat. Two lines are placed across the top of the stems, and the flags are removed. In four-four time there are four notes connected. In six-eight time only two are beamed together.
