How many bones are there in the ankle?

According to the Southern California Orthopedic Institute, there are three bones in the true ankle joint. Depending on the definition being used, the subtalar joint is also sometimes included, which has a bone that it shares with the true ankle joint, bringing the total to four.

As WebMD explains, the bones in the true ankle joint include the tibia, the fibula and the talus. Some common injuries of the ankle include sprained ankles, fractures, arthritis and gout. X-rays are commonly used to diagnose ankle problems, such as a stress x-ray that involves applying pressure to the ankle to examine it for structural deficiencies.
