Elon Farnsworth founded the bank in Michigan as the Detroit Savings Fund Institute in March 1849. Though it took in just $41 of deposits on the first day of business, it reached the $1 million mark by 1870. The bank first took the Comerica name in 1982; corporate headquarters moved to Dallas, Texas in 2007 and the banker expanded operations by acquiring Houston-based Sterling Bancshares, Inc. four years later.
