There are approximately 1,073,741,824 bytes in a gigabyte. This value equals 1,048,576 kilobytes and 1,024 megabytes, respectively. Bytes are the smallest measurement of data, and is itself made up of eight computer bits.
As of 2014, an additional letter or character in a typical text file format is registered as a single byte of data. Once a test file has reached two or three paragraphs in length, 1 kilobyte of data is added to the total. By comparison, a gigabyte of data is the equivalent of 894,784 pages of a plaintext file or 256 MP3 audio files with an average size of 4 megabytes each.
