The amount of carbohydrates present in beer varies depending on brand as well as type. Most beers, however, contain between five to 22.8 grams of carbohydrates per 12-ounce serving. Light beers generally have lower carbohydrate content when compared to darker brews, such as lagers.

Carbohydrates, such as those contained in beer, are nutritional blocks that help provide energy to the body and the brain. It is important to note that alcohol content has little association with the amount of carbohydrates inside a beer. Low alcoholic drinks, such as Clausthaler, have 0.4 percent alcohol but contain more carbohydrates at 5.8 grams-per-serving compared to a Busch Light, which has 4.1 percent alcohol and 3.5 grams of carbohydrates.
